HCPHP Webinar Series: Session 17 - SPIVA

On Demand
This is an archive of a live webinar originally aired on June 14, 2012. Description: The Seasonal and Pandemic Influenza Vaccination Assessment (SPIVA) Toolkit was created by the San Francisco Bay Area Advanced Practice Center (APC) to help local health department staff prepare for future influenza pandemics by practicing their survey, assessment, and implementation skills each year during seasonal influenza. Community assessment is a key public health function that is essential for infectious disease emergency preparedness. During this webinar, we will present two case studies to show the practical application of the SPIVA Toolkit methods: The Alameda County Public Health Department (ACPHD) Health Worker Immunization (HWI) Project was an informal qualitative assessment of health worker thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes regarding immunization. Health workers have a higher risk of exposure to, contracting of, and spreading of whatever circulating strains of influenza are in the community. Through the use of focus groups, data were collected to develop a communication strategy for the ACPHD to improve influenza vaccination rates among health workers and staff. During the 2009 H1N1 pandemic the Napa County Public Health Division used a variety of data sources to aid in identifying segments of the population who were least likely to have access to medical care, making them priority targets for the H1N1 influenza vaccine. Using these data Napa County was able to effectively allocate influenza vaccine as it was made incrementally available, while also ensuring that vaccine clinics were located in appropriate locations and advertised to target populations. Presenters: • Adam Crawley, MPH, San Francisco Bay Area Advanced Practice Center (APC) • Harvey Kayman, MD, MPH, University of California School of Public Health Course Duration (Hours): 1 SCORM
